Return of the Prodigal Son was Jacques Lipchitz's first interpretation of a biblical subject. The parable tells the story of a son who returns home after squandering his inheritance. Rather than being angry, his father welcomes him home with open arms.

Lipchitz uses intersecting forms to represent two figures. He captures an intimate moment as the father embraces and comforts his son who, according to the Gospel of Luke, "was lost but now is found."
