Gallery LabelJames Tissot was a successful painter and printmaker known for his stylish depictions of everyday life. Unlike his earlier works, etchings like this from the 1880s bear the stamp of a new artistic source: photography. This print was based on a photograph of the artist’s mistress, Kathleen Newton, sitting on the steps of his studio with her niece, Lilian Hervey. Lilian later recounted that Tissot would pose his models and make a photograph, which he then used as the basis for his paintings and prints.
