DescriptionHelmet-shaped silver cream jug with shaped base and thread handle. The edge of the jug is decorated with bead wire. The body is engraved with "bright cut" work of flowers, leaves, and feathers.Gallery LabelThe cascading flowers and delicate scrolls decorating this cream jug achieve their sparkle from a type of engraving known as bright cutting. With this technique, the design is cut into the metal in small, angled gouges creating a faceted, reflective indention. The base and top edge of the jug are ornamented with rows of tiny balls known as beading, a characteristic feature of Hester Bateman's work. From a family of prominent silversmiths, Bateman and her husband John began the business that continued for three generations.
