NOTES:

[1] J. S. Atha was Chairman of the Friends of Art Selection Committee, which oversaw the acquisition of Modern artworks to be presented to the Nelson-Atkins. Atha purchased this painting in 1949 and offered it at the December 9, 1949 Friends of Art meeting as a door prize to encourage a campaign for new members. The winner was drawn by lot from the names of new Friends of Art members and established members who brought a new member into the organization. Gertrude M. Lighton won the painting, and gave it to the Friends of Art at the same meeting. NAMA Archives, Friends of Art Minutes, 1949.
