The artistic and technical talents of Taxile Doat are demonstrated in this plaque that combines reliefs of apple branches in earth-toned, matte and high-gloss glazes with reliefs of figures against brilliant blue panels.  Using the technique of pâte-sur-pâte, Doat painstakingly built up these figures with layers of thinned clay; they were then carved into cameo-like ornaments.  The plaque's decoration features the Feast of Venus, including gathering apples, Venus' sacred fruit.  After leading an atelier at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, Doat led the University City Pottery in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1909 to 1914 before returning to France.
