While driving through back roads of Kentucky, Kristine Potter came upon an old car stuck in a ravine. She recalled Flannery O’Connor’s 1953 short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find," in which a family driving from Georgia to Florida crash their car in a ditch. As they look for help, they encounter a dangerous, violent escaped convict named The Misfit.
“I remember a haunting passage from that story,” recalls Potter. “After one of the murders, O’Connor described this wind that blew through the forest, like the trees were finally able to breathe. This idea that the forest required a sacrifice or violence was implied.”
