DescriptionThe lid is in the shape of reversed bowl, and it has a bud-shaped knob made of gilded wood. The lid's lip extends a few inches horizontally, and it sits on the long neck of the vase. The vase has broad shoulders, and its body tapers towards its base. The lid and body are filled with multiple motifs and patterns: large, white, low-relief lotus flowers, dragons, books, manji-kuzushi (sayagata) pattern, kumi-kikkō pattern, and palmet (karakusa) pattern. The vase’s neck is decorated with a wave (seigaiha) pattern, dark blue clouds, and dragons. The shoulder area features a blue background with a gold pallet pattern, and books (closed and open) and dragons are painted over the palmet pattern. The lower register of the vase is filled with dark blue motifs featuring a pair of stylized phoenixes fit in compartmentalized windows. The lowest register around the base shows a scroll of plant motif. The surface decoration is painted with overglaze enamels and gold. The lotus flower reliefs are tinted with light, underglaze cobalt blue. Provenance
