Gallery Label

Curiosity about China in the 18th century rivaled that about Japan. In this set of views, some have a European feel, as in the View of Peking, which has framing trees on the left, in the manner of the classical landscape tradition. Others like The Country Seat of a Provincial Governor, Built over an Artificial Cascade with Pleasure House in the Midst of a Lake imitate the less realistic Chinese landscape style with buildings almost floating like clouds on the crater and abrupt hillocks beyond.
