DescriptionComposite image of eighteen photo booth strips mounted horizontally next to one another. Each strip is composed of four vertical images of the same person(s). All portraits are of individuals except one strip, which features a man and woman together. The artist, Jared Bark, is pictured in the the tenth photo strip from the left.Gallery Label

“The [photo] booths were like stalls in a public restroom or a phone booth. They felt like cheap motel rooms to me. I went back, picked up scraps of photo strips people had discarded, met people and got their photos, and I also pursued what I thought of as a kind of documentary, anthropology project, photographing people in booths all over the country.” —Jared Bark

Bark made portraits, still lifes, and abstractions with his photobooth. Isla Vista, California highlights a classic photobooth portrait format, while other pieces from this series take a more abstract approach.
