DescriptionUsing fine black lines, this small horizontally oriented drypoint print depicts a dark-haired man wearing a coat and seated in a crouch in an ambiguous setting. He is positioned close to the picture plane so that his body fills the composition from its upper to lower edge. The environment in which he is situated may include a curb, step, or low bench (judging from the position of his body) as well as what may be the wall of a building and possibly a doorway in the upper left of the composition. The man is shown in profile to the viewer of the print so that his proper left side is visible. He rests his proper right hand and arm across his upraised knees, while reaching out with the open palm of his proper left hand in a gesture suggesting he is in the act of begging. The monogram “AB” appears at the composition’s lower edge approximately a quarter of the way into the scene from the left.Exhibition HistoryNone
