InscribedPrinted captions on paper, attached to mount verso, in black type: "Natives of Macao. / THESE girls who may always be distin- / guished by the gay coloured handker- / chiefs thrown over the head, are seen / at most of the open ports in China. / They are not pure Chinese, but are / generally of mixed blood, sometimes of / Portuguese descent on one side. / ¶ They are as a rule extremely pretty, / and wear the Chinese dress, but their / moral character is frequently doubtful. / Their complexions are fairer than the Chinese, and sometimes when young they may be termed beautiful."
