DescriptionHand-colored photograph of two girls wearing similiar dresses, hats, coats, and boots. They are in a room with a strange perspective magnified by a checkered floor and series of arches.Exhibition History
Rotation 22. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,
Kansas City, MO, August 10, 2016 – January 8, 2017, no cat.
This work is an example of an early hand-colored photograph. The addition of color enhances the subjects’ appearance, while also imparting a sense of theatricality to the interior setting. It is unclear what alterations, if any, were made to this image. It was not uncommon for professional studios to add invented background elements to a photograph.
