DescriptionTwo children on stairs looking at the camera in stereotypical Asian masks. Child in the foreground has large paper back hanging from shoulder.Gallery LabelThese two trick-or-treaters, returning the photographer’s gaze with masked stares, hint at a haunted sense of dual identity. Born in San Francisco and raised in Japan, Yasuhiro Ishimoto returned to California as a young man to study. His education was abruptly interrupted by World War II. From 1941 to 1945, Ishimoto was detained with thousands of other Japanese Americans at the Amache Internment Camp in Colorado. While interned there, Ishimoto learned basic photographic skills from fellow detainees. After his release, Ishimoto moved to Chicago, where he studied photography with Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan at the Institute of Design.
