In 1899 the Ault family moved from Cleveland, Ohio, to London where Ault studied the art of the Old Masters and received formal training. This watercolor, painted when Ault was just 17 years old, was inspired by his family’s summers at Cap Gris Nez, a cape on the Pas-de-Calais in northern France. These idyllic rural landscapes stand in marked contrast to the more stylistically adventurous contour line drawings, surreal scenes, biomorphic forms and linear abstractions that Ault created in succeeding decades.
