DescriptionSurreal, possibly snow-covered, landscape under a night sky with full moon and dark clouds. Valley in foreground flanked by abstract cliffs, while trees recede into the distance from middle groundGallery Label
This aptly titled drawing does not depict an identifiable landscape. Rather, it presents a dreamscape or a place visited in journeys of the subconscious. To give the unseen visual form, Ault multiplied the looming, snow-capped geological monument from an earlier, equally surreal drawing that hangs nearby. The march of these strange, striated formations at either side of the composition amplifies the effect of recession into this nocturnal landscape accented with spectral clouds.
