DescriptionThis small ink and pencil on paperboard drawing is a full-length depiction of a dapper turn-of-the-century gentleman. The mustachioed man, who fills the page top to bottom, scowls slightly as he faces forward with his weight over his proper right foot. His proper right hand is in his pants' pocket, while his proper left hand holds a cigar or cigarette raised to the level of his shoulder. He wears a bowler hat, the brim of which shades his eyes. He is smartly dressed in a wide, dark cravat, plaid vest, dark jacket with tails that nearly reach the back of his knees, light jodhpur-style pants, and wing-tip shoes. Long vertical lines running from the man's knees to his feet suggest the possibility of movement. The artist's signature (which also features elongated strokes of the pen, particularly for the letter "H") is prominent in the lower right corner of the composition, along with the date: "99." The same subject is rendered on the verso in pencil.Copyright© Heirs of Josephine N. Hopper / Licensed by Artists Rights Society (ARS), NY
