DescriptionThe surface of this small, square ink drawing is highly animated. Black lines of varying weights suggest pine trees. Some of these trees grow straight, while others lean to the left and right, creating a dynamic rhythm across the surface of the cream-colored sheet. The lines that describe the ground from which this stand of pines grows evoke an undulating sensation—a landscape in motion. What may be a faint suggestion of a horizon line extends across the composition from edge to edge approximately one-quarter of the way down from its top edge. Densely drawn, generally horizontal parallel lines in this upper register suggest dark sky, while the areas devoid of lines suggest clouds. The artist’s monogram, a conjoined “AB” appears just below the lower right corner of the drawing. The year the drawing was made, 1941, is written in the lower left corner of the margin of the sheet.Copyright© Albert Bloch Foundation
