DescriptionImage of a woman dressed in an off-the-shoulder dress with a tiny pointed cap; she is leaning against a pillar which holds an urn filled with flowers. This half-plate daguerreotype is partially colored and housed in a black and gold passé partout style mat.Gallery LabelAt the time this image was made, its vivid, intricate details would only have been possible using the daguerreotype process. Prized for its brilliant tones and almost microscopic detail, the daguerreotype was first introduced in France in 1839.
The identity of the sitter is unknown, but given the large size of the plate (more costly than smaller plates) and photographer Victor Plumier’s elite clientele, it is possible that she was a wealthy woman dressed for a ball.
