Horace Ashton was a pioneering American photojournalist. This image is probably a self-portrait and portrays the photographer as an adventurous and privileged observer of the spectacle of modern life. True to the photograph, Ashton did record many of the transformations in the world around him. He captured the first public flights by the Wright Brothers, the throngs of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, and the rising skyscrapers of New York City.
