Rotation 9. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 20 – March 13, 2011, no cat.
Will Connell earned his living as an advertising photographer, but devoted considerable energy to his personal creative work. His most notable artistic effort, a book titled In Pictures, explored a variety of themes involving theater and film, often tinged with a political, humorous or cynical tone. This series, begun in 1933, was a satire on the Hollywood film industry. To create these works, Connell built elaborate studio setups and directed a varied cast of players. He also made innovative use of a variety of provocative modernist techniques, including photomontage, printing from sandwiched negatives, odd or exaggerated viewpoints and optical distortions.
