Gallery LabelThis example of fine Kutani ware would have been used by elite military clans. Characteristically, the enamels are richly colored, and the yellow patterns in the background are reminiscent of gold-leafed screen paintings such as those by Kaihō Yūshō (to the right). Recent excavations have revealed that Kutai ware was manufactured in Arita, Japan’s premier porcelain production center.
