Gallery Label
Fine Kutani wares, like this bowl, would have been used by elite military clans. Characteristically, the enamels are richly colored, and the yellow patterns in the background are reminiscent of gold-leafed screen paintings such as those by Kaihō Yūshō. Recent excavations have revealed that Kutani-ware was manufactured in Arita, Japan’s premier porcelain production center.
