Purchased from Yie Chang-haou, through the dealer C. T. Loo, by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1946 [2].

NOTES:

[1] According to acquisition documents in the Nelson-Atkins files, Yie Chang-haou was a partner of New York dealer C. T. Loo. The Museum made payment for the object to Loo. See “Objects Acquired for the Museum by Laurence Sickman,” Nelson-Atkins Archives, RG80-15 William Rockhill Nelson Trust Records, series 9, box 11.

[2] Curator of Asian Art Laurence Sickman purchased this object when he was stationed in Tokyo while serving with the U.S. Army’s Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives section after World War II. As part of his duties, Sickman made numerous trips within Japan, China, and Korea, during which he sometimes purchased objects for the Nelson-Atkins. Sickman bought this object during a short trip to China in March 1946. “Objects Acquired for the Museum by Laurence Sickman,” Nelson-Atkins Archives, RG80-15 William Rockhill Nelson Trust Records, series 9, box 11.
