The contorted faces and bent bodies of Adam and Eve convey their remorse and anguish after their fall from grace. Modeled after Michelangelo’s scene on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, this engraving is one of many prints Marcantonio Raimondi based on other artists’ designs. Reproductions such as this helped circulate the stylistic innovations of Italian Renaissance art to a wider audience.
