Gallery LabelJohn Lawrence Stoner and his wife Betty (whose Market Place hangs nearby) traveled together to Mexico. Although they are stylistically distinct, the Stoners’ woodcuts form a thematic pair. Road to Market, No. 2 portrays—largely through the use of line—a parade of men and beasts burdened with goods. Betty S. Stoner continued the story with a more densely patterned image that describes the bustling commerce that occurs once the procession reaches its destination.
