Gallery LabelLocated just outside Kyoto (Japan’s former capital), Ōtsu became a major tourist destination during the Edo period (1615–1868). Local workshop painters portrayed subjects like these everyday people and popular theater repertoires using lively brushwork. Humorous Ōtsu-e paintings were popular souvenirs.
