Biography review 1936 – 1938
• May 1936 Feininger returned to NYC; first time since leaving for Germany in 1887
• June 12, 1936 Met with his West Coast dealer, Galka Scheyer, in Los Angeles;
taught a class at Mills College in Oakland; laid groundwork for return to United States
• August 1936 Returned to Hamburg, Germany where his work was included in the
Deutscher Kuenstlerbund exhibition Deutsche Kunst im Olympiajahr; ten days after his arrival, the exhibition was closed and the DK group outlawed
• June 11, 1937 Boarded ship for NY
• July 19, 1937 Entartete Kunst exhibition opened in Munich; 8 paintings, 1 watercolor and
13 woodcuts by Feininger included; 378 Feininger works confiscated from public collections in Germany
• Summer 1937 Taught at Mills College
• 1938 Took up residence in NYC
