DescriptionTwo-handled, footed dish, the waist of the base set with mother-of-pearl and with wirework decoration and the handles pierced with a trefoil design.Gallery LabelThis gracefully proportioned dish exemplifies the aesthetics, design and production methods of the English Arts and Crafts Movement. The dish's Celtic-inspired panels of scrolling silver wire, punctuated by inset semi-precious stones, exemplify the simple, yet elegant, forms of the Movement. The designer Richard George Hatton balanced the dish's decorative flourishes with the polished body of the dish and the sweeping curve of the looped handles. The manufacturer, Newcastle Handicrafts Company, typified the small craft guilds that sought to improve everyday life through beautiful and superbly crafted functional objects.
