Gallery LabelSamuel Chamberlain was an architect and prolific printmaker. Faneuil Hall, Boston demonstrates his understanding of both disciplines. He combined depth, textures and the interplay of light and dark with details that make us feel as if we are there at this historic meeting hall and marketplace.
Chamberlain maintained the correct orientation of this well-known subject just as Whistler had done in Black Lion Wharf by painstakingly reversing what he saw on site when he created his sketches. These drawings helped him translate the scene to the plate, so that the "Cradle of Liberty" would appear in the finished print just as it has in life since 1742.
