Reynold Henry Weidenaar, a Kansas City Art Institute-trained etcher, was so dedicated to the medium that he designed and hand-crafted his own etching tools. Market Place is likewise an invention of the artist’s own making. The world he created spilling into the distance repays each moment a viewer spends surveying it. We are rewarded not only with fine etching and incredible detail, but also with humor. Like the figure who leans through an open window at the upper left of the crowded composition, Weidenaar invites us to become voyeurs. We can look out our imaginary window to gaze upon and chuckle at the wheeling and dealing, and horse trading and hoodwinking that take place below in the street.
