NOTES:
[1] This is one of a group of objects that came to the Nelson-Atkins from the family of William Rockhill Nelson, one of the museum’s founders, and is thought to have been in Nelson’s home, Oak Hall. An inscription carved into the back bottom of the piece reads: 'D.Z01', 'Gallr. Fra Lapini', 'Firenze 1896'. Nelson visited Florence for an extended stay in 1896 and acquired a number of works of art during his trip. It is likely he had this bust made at that time.
