Gallery LabelUkiyoe ("pictures of the floating world") woodblock prints were fashionable during the Edo period (1615-1868), especially the 1700s. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was one of the last ukiyoe artists popular with collectors in the late 1800s.
The Taira family was a warrior clan that ruled Japan in the second half of the 1100s. The stories of the catastrophic defeat of the Tairas inspired playwrights of Nō theater. The artist Yoshitoshi was fascinated by these legends and designed several prints depicting the rise and fall of the Taira clan.
