Exhibition HistoryArchitecture and Decorative Arts in Prints from the Permanent Collection, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, March 13-April 10, 1983, no. 8, as Design for a title page, undated (16th century).
This title page was made for a book of emblems, family trees and coats of arms of various noble families. The blanks indicate this particular version of the print was made before the title was inserted. The decorations include masks, grotesque figures and animals and are typical of the taste for fantasy in late 16th- century art of the so-called Mannerist period. At a time when noble birth was extremely important, such books were like a certificate of hereditary power and status.
