Gallery Label

Lu Zhi painted the blue-and-green landscape for his friend Lu Shen, represented as a red-robed gentleman meditating in a tranquil setting. Lu Shen wrote his artist’s name, Xishi (stream and rocks), in two large characters on the frontispiece (the section of the scroll that precedes the painting). Their mentor, Wen Zhengming, added an inscription on the colophon (the section after the painting). Wen praises the painting and the lofty-minded Lu Shen, who devoted himself to nature rather than seeking fame and fortune. The calligraphy of both inscriptions is written in the squared-off style of clerical script.
