However, the somewhat awkward composition, spontaneous line, and careful indentification of place and date suggest something other than a scenic invention. Indeed, the Kansas City Times confirmed that Kuhn visited Kansas City in mid-June of 1936 and made this sketch on the spot at the Red & Dutch Budweiser Hall, a well-known West Bottoms nightclub featuring a bandstand, dance floor, and 40-foot bar.
