DescriptionThis horizontally oriented composition is a panel of colored stripes separated by fins of different colors. The stripes are green, blue, and yellow. The fins along the top portion of the panel are orange, and they intercept with blue fins along the bottom half of the panel. Altogether, the object is like a colorful rainbow that changes color as the viewer moves past it.Exhibition HistoryCarlos Cruz-Diez: A Legacy in Color, Sicardi |Ayers| Bacino, Houston, Texas, August 31-December 22, 2023.
Carlos Cruz-Diez's "chromatic event," Physichromie Panam 110, reveals our ability to radically alter color simply by changing our position relative to the work. Our motion causes the multitude of protruding aluminum finsto interact and generate new ranges of color not actually present on the support at all. As a self-described "artist who applies the discipline of a scientist," Cruz-Diez uses his artistic practice to prove his theory that color is an evolving reality.
