The individuals Schutmaat encountered in the desert often lived nomadic lives on society’s fringes. He recalls meeting Jimmy, the man pictured here, as he was hitching a ride near Amarillo, Texas: “He was an eccentric character, and didn’t say much. He looked like someone from a Cormac McCarthy novel. He was wearing this bandana, and when he removed it, it revealed a really distinct tan line. It was a detail that demonstrated his time wandering on the road in the desert.”
