DescriptionThis is a polychrome ōban woodblock print. It depicts personified shōgi pieces and introduces seven aspects of the board game. At the top right in the blue cartouche is the title of the print kyōga shōgi zukushi (Comical Pictures of Chess Pieces). The print has a three-tiered composition. The top register depicts nigiri koma (grabbing pieces) and tobi shōgi (jumping pieces). The middle register includes hasami shōgi (sandwiching shōgi) and tsume shōgi (cornering shōgi). And the bottom register introduces hajiki shōgi (flicking shōgi), hadaka ō (unclothed king), and mawari shōgi (circling shōgi) are in the bottom register. The print bears the artist’s name 芳年 (Yoshitoshi) and the seal reading 角金 (kakukin), which appears to be of the publisher, in the lower right corner. The print is the right piece of a triptych.
