Anne Noggle came to photography at the age of 42 after a career as an Air Force pilot. In her self-portraits and images of older women, Noggle asserts the strength of mature faces and bodies, challenging our mainstream culture that tends to ignore them. In this self-portrait, for example, Noggle looks directly into the camera, naked as she floats in a lake with a string of pearls around her neck. The frankness of her gaze challenges ageist stereotypes.
