Gallery Label
In 1924, Louis Valtat bought a house in Choisel, a small village in the Vallée de Chevreuse, a little southwest of Paris. His garden, and the flowers and fruit that he grew, became the main source of inspiration for his paintings, likely including this expressive still life. Valtat’s vibrant paintings live somewhere between Impressionism, with its emphasis on the shifting light and atmosphere, and Fauvism, a style characterized by bold colors and energetic brushwork.
