DescriptionImage of a large hot air balloon weighed down with sand bags and surrounded by people in a town square. Additional onlookers are lined up in rows across the street.Gallery LabelIn this image, a crowd of curious onlookers gathers to examine one of Henri Lachambre’s hot air balloons, tethered to the ground with ropes and sandbags. Lachambre was an avid aeronaut and balloon manufacturer who produced these aerial transports in his factory in suburban Paris. Lachambre made approximately 500 ascents himself, and he supplied balloons to the U.S. Signal Corps and the ill-fated arctic mission led by Swedish explorer Salomon A. Andrée in 1897.
