DescriptionImage of a porcelain bowl decorated with a floral motif and resting on an ornate bronze base.Gallery LabelWhen Louis-Rémy Robert made this photograph in the 1850s, the French porcelain factory Sèvres, which produced this elaborate bowl, was slipping behind its competitors in both artistic and scientific innovation. Photographs like this one were given to patrons to create interest in newly produced pieces and encourage brand loyalty.
Robert was head of Sèvres’s painting workshop, though he began his career as a chemist. This dual background in science and art lent itself well to photography’s early experimental years that required knowledge of both.
