This photograph was taken at a military horse-breeding center in Trakehnen, Prussia (present-day Yasnaya Polyana, Russia). In the early 1800s, Ottomar Anschütz gained notoriety in the scientific and photographic communities for his high-speed photography, taking successful exposures of 1/1000 of a second. Anschütz used these fast exposures to convey the distinctive beauty and dynamic energy of this horse breed.
