DescriptionImage of three children playing outside. There are two wooden chairs with a string tied between them; a small boy uses clothespins to hang dark sheets of paper from the string. The young girl on the left inspects a box with a handle while the taller boy on the right holds a toy airplane.Gallery LabelJeanette V. Bernard was a music teacher from Long Island, New York, who took thousands of photographs from 1904 to 1924 and hand-developed them in her home. She playfully recreates that practice here with children in her backyard.
After the invention of George Eastman’s Original Kodak camera in 1888, photography’s popularity exploded around the world. In the following decades, self-proclaimed amateur photographers formed clubs, published journals, exhibited prints, and submitted work for competition. The hand-held, fixed-focus camera came preloaded with film, allowing hobbyists like Bernard easier access to the medium.
