Exhibition History"A Way of Reasoning on Paper," The Art of Saul Steinberg, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri. April 18 - December 3, 2023.
Throughout Steinberg’s career, purposely illegible signatures, impossible-to-read inscriptions, and captions embellish many of his drawings. These calligraphic marks add flourish, fun, and sometimes frustration to the experience of viewing his art. This work appears related to The Signature (reproduced below), which scholars identified as abstractly recalling Steinberg’s “ST” monogram. Both drawings read like an autograph. They may be a clever form of veiled self-portraiture and evidence of Steinberg’s signature wit.
