DescriptionImage of railway station with train tracks crossing under a covered platform. Arched doorways and wall sconces line both sides of the platform. Rail cars are parked near left and right edges of the frame.Gallery Label
Édouard-Denis Baldus photographed the train station in Toulon while on commission for the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) railroad. Baldus places his subject in the center, using the slender train tracks to lead the viewer’s eye to the station. To make this print Baldus used a glass negative, which provided greater detail and clarity than paper negatives. This bold, simple composition devoid of extraneous detail was well suited to Baldus’s modern architectural subject.
