DescriptionDetail image of woman walking next to a baby carriage; she is wearing sandals with ankle straps.Gallery LabelDavid Vestal brings us to where quick-stepping feet and spinning wheels meet the road in New York’s busy streets. Vestal studied painting but dedicated himself to photography after meeting Sid Grossman, co-founder of the Photo League. At a time when there were few places to study photography, the New York-based League offered classes and an affordable darkroom, organized exhibitions, and held lectures. There, Grossman encouraged students like Vestal to photograph the streets where they lived and to capture not only the look but the feel of everyday life.
