DescriptionImage of a miniature diorama depicting a group of mountaineers crossing a crevasse and ascending an ice-covered mountain. The diorama rests on a raised platform and is surrounded by "snow" debris, a spot light, and other materials (putty knife, paint brushes, plaster) used in its creation.Gallery Label
The collaborative team of Cortis and Sonderegger recreate iconic photographs from history as three-dimensional models. Upon completion, they photograph their models to include the messy studio surroundings, including the tools and materials used to make them. Cortis and Sonderegger’s process calls attention to the staging of photographs, whether made in the studio or as a historic record. Here, they replicate an Alpine view originally made by the Bisson Frères (Bisson Brothers) in the early 1860s.
