DescriptionImage of a gazebo decorated with striped bunting flags and narrow flags with stars and stripes hanging from the columns.Gallery LabelDow once described everyday architecture and signage as “more alive, more intrinsically worthwhile than all the official architecture and historic spots.” Driving through upstate New York one Memorial Day, he saw this gazebo festooned with patriotic bunting. As he recalls: “American flags of all sizes and conditions were fluttering in front yards, on buildings and poles. Every town was chock-a-block full of them and this particular structure reminded me of a patriotic layer cake, maybe a little past its freshness.”
