DescriptionImage of two women wearing ornate hats seated at a table with wine glasses. They are both wearing cocktail hats and pearl necklaces. The woman on the left looks toward the viewer with her right hand on her cheek.Gallery Label
Lisette Model often photographed subjects in unguarded moments, stripping away elegance and laying bare the artifice associated with keeping up appearances. As photographer Edward Steichen once noted: “she strikes swift, hard and sharp…her work is devoid of all extraneous devices or exaggerations.” Model’s unsparing approach to her subjects had a strong influence on Diane Arbus, who studied with Model when she taught at the New School for Social Research from 1951 until her death.
